11-1-18
For our last day in Nashville, we visited The Hermitage, home of Andrew Jackson.  However, there is a hitch.  He and his wife, Rachel, who died shortly after he took office and was, by the way, a bigamist, never lived in the mansion.  They had a stoutly built two-story log cabin on the grounds, but this home was never theirs.  The museum and house had lots of historical artifacts belonging to the Jacksons, or their contemporaries, but the mansion was not their home.  Doesn't this seem like cheating?

In any event, I learned about Jackson's presidency and saw lots of parallels between the politics of today and back then.  Everyone was out for himself and wanted to fill his pocket but they were a bit more subtle and at least said the right things about being for the common man.  One thing that didn't remind me of today was the ability to negotiate compromises.

Here is my chuckle for the day:

  1. You and Hary are visiting some of the sane places i visited and enjoyed while in the Nashville area: ie the reica of the Athenian Parthenon and the Andrew Jackson place. I was still teaching about ancient civilizations and the giant statue of Athena inside the roof of the temple was so impressive. In Athens on the Acropolis the ruins are special but the Nashville tribute puts human experience into the scene in the way it must have been to enter and stand in awe
